New York City – December 22nd kicked off the annual Jewish “Festival of Lights” that lasts through December 30, 2019. The lighting of the world’s largest Menorah in New York City is located in Grand Army Plaza at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue adjacent to Central Park and across from the Plaza. Yaacov Agam designed the Menorah with inspiration of the original in the Holy Temple of Jerusalem.
Millions of New Yorkers and visitors enjoy the lighting of the 36-foot-high, 4,000-pound steel, eight limbs, gold-colored icon. Crane and two lifts raise the lighters up due to the height of the gigantic candelabra. Live music, dancing and traditional foods are shared.
