CERAMICS
Las Vegas, Nevada: At this year’s show, I talked to a few exhibitors about enhancements to the outside of vehicles. I learned about ceramic products by speaking to various exhibitors. For several years, ceramics have been the “hot” button detail product that enables professionals, individuals and others to create a high-gloss, hydrophobic (water resistant) film on vehicles. Strong chemical bonds in ceramics provide a layer of protection between the paint and air. Ceramics are basically silicon dioxide (SiO2) and, sometimes, other additives. They are applied to a clean surface by spraying or manual application. Depending on driving, weather and storage conditions, ceramic coatings generally last between 3 to 12 months before reapplication is necessary.
Considering that new paint jobs cost thousands of dollars, manufacturers and vehicle builders often use a ceramic protective coating on the newly painted surfaces. So, how do ceramic products fit with traditional waxes and polishes? I think of it this way; consumer product companies regularly offer new and improved offerings (e.g., tooth care products) and electronic businesses add accessory items to their product lines. Ceramics are a means of extending the range of car care products sold and used by commercial auto stores as well as professional detailers. Ceramic products do not necessarily replace or make traditional waxes and polishes obsolete.
