I had the good fortune to get some pheasant hunting in over the Thanksgiving holiday. My son and a few other family members arranged a day at McCollum’s hunting preserve in Bejou, MN. If you have never had the opportunity, I would highly recommend it. We had a great hunt, between our guide and his amazing dog and the guaranteed birds it was a winning combination. Everyone got a lot of shooting; I will admit, we missed more than a few birds. Even though we were hunting released birds, it reminded me of younger days hunting wild birds in South Dakota. It is obvious to me they put a lot of thought into the habitat and how we can best hunt this land in relation to the size of any group.
As the day went on, we were hunted out, our guide and his dog were graciously willing to continue hunting until we had gotten our allotted birds. We all agreed it was a perfect day and time to be done. We returned to the lodge and we were served the best wild rice pheasant I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Once the birds were cleaned and packaged to perfection as my wife noted later when preparing, we had a short drive home to Fargo. I want to thank Terry for making it a day with family that I will never forget.
